Choosing Your Wedding Cake Flavour
Choosing the flavour for your wedding cake is arguably as important, if not more so, than the design of its exterior – afterall, you want a cake that you’ll remember for years to come, not just for how it looked but for how it tasted too.
Gone are the days when fruit cake was a must for your wedding cake, and now you can choose from virtually any flavour. So where do you start?
What Do YOU Like?
First of all, ask yourself “what flavours do I like?” It is your wedding and everything about the day should reflect you and your partner instead of trying to please everyone. So unless you love vanilla cake with vanilla filling, don’t feel you have to choose it just because it is a crowd-pleaser.
Consider Unusual or Seasonal Flavours
Some flavours are considered more seasonal than others, such as strawberry or blueberry flavours in summer, or cinnamon and gingerbread in winter.
I also encourage my couples to select a different flavour for each tier of their wedding cake – this gives you an opportunity to try something a little different, such as a tropical coconut sponge with passion fruit filled tier, along side perhaps an indulgent chocolate and salted caramel tier, and still offer a crowd-pleasing vanilla cake.
Here are a few of my favourite unique flavours:
Lemon sponge with lemon and elderflower filling
Vanilla sponge with strawberries and cream buttercream
Coconut sponge with passion fruit filling
Chocolate sponge with salted caramel filling
Apple crumble sponge with cinnamon swirl buttercream
Vanilla sponge with raspberry ripple (just like the ice cream) filling
and so many more…!
Have a Tasting Session
Once you have an idea of what you would like, speak to your cake maker about a taster session. These can be done face-to-face, or what I like to do is give my couples a sample box to take home and enjoy together and make their final decision in their own time and comfort.
I hope that’s got you thinking and your mouth watering for an exciting cake flavour!
Give Yourself Enough Time
Don’t forget that cake makers can book up sometimes a year in advance, often longer during peak summer seasons, so don’t leave it too late to start your search – I know I hate having to turn brides away because I am unavailable for their date.
If you are looking for a wedding cake designer in the Lincolnshire and Newark area, I would love to hear from you. Send me a message using the form below and I’d be happy to discuss your dream wedding cake with you.
